The "World Partnership Conference on Education for Sustainable Development
– Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade" will be held in London,
United Kingdom from 6th-15th April 2009. Co-organizers of the conference
are UNESCO and UNDP, in collaboration with the UN General Assembly. 1,250
participants from all world regions will come together at the London
Conference.

Five years into the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development,
for which UNESCO is the lead agency, the conference aims to highlight the
relevance of ESD to all of education, promote international exchange on
ESD, especially between countries of the world, carry out a stock-taking
of the implementation of the UN Decade and develop strategies for the way
ahead.

The world is changing rapidly. Prosperity has reached unprecedented
levels. But so have our demands on education and environment, and so has
the gap between rich and poor. Natural resources provide services that
sustain our lives and are crucial for economic development and human well
being. Using natural resources sustainably is key to ensuring their
availability also for future generations while satisfying the needs of
today.

The "World Partnership Conference on Education for Sustainable Development
– Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade" aspire amongst other
things.

# To renew commitments to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by
2015.
# Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
# Achieve universal primary education.
# Promote gender equality and empower women.
# Develop a Global Partnership for Community Development.
# Set out concrete plans and practical steps for action.
